Background
With abundant mineral resources, such as coal and iron ore, Jharkhand has been a key player in steel production in India. Since the focus has now shifted towards decarbonization in the net-zero scenario, Jharkhand is moving towards a low carbon economy. The state is actively working on adopting renewable energy sources, implementing energy-efficient technologies, promoting a circular economy and engaging local communities in the sustainable transition process.
By prioritizing sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, Jharkhand aims to create a greener and more sustainable future for its carbon-intensive steel industry and the state as a whole. To align with India’s net-zero target, the Jharkhand Government has constituted a Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition to assess, estimate and recommend the transition related recommendations by creating a roadmap. Also, the state government has created a sub-task force on the Green Hydrogen Mission to assess the current scenario of hydrogen energy, best practices from around the globe, its applicability in the state to create a roadmap for implementing the mission in Jharkhand.
Set in this backdrop, the Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition, Government of Jharkhand and its technical partners Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED) organised a stakeholder consultation on Green Steel on 25 May 2023 in Ranchi.
