Mother Network Briefing Note

As you know Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED) has been involved in creating sustainable solution to maintain a healthy, rich and diverse environment in the Indo-Gangetic region with focus on sustainable development. CEED primarily works on the thematic issues of clean energy, clean air, clean water and zero waste solutions. CEED has contributed towards path breaking solutions on clean energy and clean air in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.

You must be knowing that air pollution has become an issue of public health emergency, which affects all but the most impacted are the children, and women with vulnerable condition such as during pregnancy. Various studies, particularly of World Health Organisation and Unicef, emphatically suggest that air pollution is associated with some of the biggest killers of children, such as pneumonia, asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory infections and diseases, which can be debilitating, forcing children to gap schooldays and even can cause lasting damage to their health and well-being. The alarming level of air pollution in the state of Bihar is harming millions of children and ruining their lives since air of Patna, Muzaffarpur and Gaya is most polluted in India. In Bihar alone, air pollution contributed to the death of more than 14,000 children under the age of 5 in 2017.

In such grim scenario, a holistic action is needed at all levels to address air pollution, be it at government, community or individual level. At individual and community level, mothers can be agents of change, provided they are identified, aware and supported. In fact, the role of mothers is paramount as they have an unbeatable combination of emotion, passion and strength towards their child.

Therefore, CEED calls upon empowering mothers in the fight against air pollution to ensure that the children have clean air right now, and for their better and safe future. CEED is taking lead to collaborate with proud mothers like you and is launching a first of its kind initiative on a digital platform-WhatsApp to promote a emotional bonding and community building on shared concern between mothers, and facilitate mutual interaction on issues related to not only health but also on safe water, waste management, livelihood options, and sustainable environment. We are hopeful that It will adequately relay the voices and concern and demands of mothers to decision makers and influencers at government and societal levels.

The objectives of the Mothers Network are as mentioned below-

  • TO PROTECT: For facilitating a situation to avoid the exposer of air pollution, the Mothers Network will be empowered with specific precautions and advisory that they should take for their families.
  • TO SHARE VOICES: Mothers Network will work to amplify voices and concerns to appropriate decision makers at local and national levels
  • TO COMMUNICATE: Mothers Network will work to connect the dots in crisp and lucid discussion on air pollutants through education and outreach.

We are hopeful that you will have an engaging experience of these digital/virtual initiatives. Together all mothers can make difference in society!

With Regards
